Summer Update: What a Busy Few Months!
What a summer it has been at the Day Centre! We’ve been incredibly busy over the past few months, with plenty of activities, trips, delicious meals, fundraising and exciting news to share.
First of all, a huge thank you to all the school children who have joined us during the holidays to lend a hand. It has been fantastic having you with us, and we hope you’ve enjoyed your time at the Day Centre. Good luck with going back to school tomorrow!
We finished our summer programme with a Day at the Movies theme day, complete with a fantastic three-course lunch. Members enjoyed spring rolls, a delicious roast beef dinner, followed by waffles and ice cream — and, of course, homemade cookies!
Our Biggest News Yet! 🏗️
We are absolutely thrilled to announce that planning permission has been granted for our new Day Centre building on Charles Street!
This is a huge milestone for us and brings us one step closer to making our dream building a reality. There’s just one small matter… £4.6 million to raise! 😲
So, there is plenty of fundraising to come, and we’ll be keeping you up to date with all our plans.
We’ve already been getting started with Annanopoly, where local businesses bought squares on our very own Monopoly board. Thanks to everyone who took part, we raised an amazing £420 towards the new build!
Cancer Connections 💜
In July, we also launched Cancer Connections, a local meet-up for anyone who is currently, or has previously been, affected by cancer.
It’s still early days, and we’re taking some time to find out what people would like from the group and how we can make it useful and welcoming.
Cancer Connections takes place on the first Tuesday of every month at 10.30am at the Day Centre, with a cuppa and a cake included, of course! ☕🍰
Summer Food & Fun 🍓
We enjoyed a summer picnic meal which went down a treat! Members were treated to another delicious three-course meal, starting with soup, followed by a picnic-style buffet where everyone could help themselves. Dessert was a delicious Eton mess and homemade strawberry tarts.
We’ve also been out and about, with two summer trips.
Our trip to the Keswick Markets was incredibly popular, and a great day was had by everyone. We also enjoyed a little trip to Crazy Golf in Carlisle, which brought plenty of fun and laughter.
Both trips were such a success that we’re hoping to return again in the future!
Keeping Active
Of course, all our usual activities continued throughout the summer, with members enjoying line dancing, tai chi, chair Pilates and our aqua classes.
Our activities are designed to be accessible for everyone, and it’s fantastic to see so many members getting involved and enjoying keeping active together.
And there’s more to come! From September, we’re excited to be introducing Aqua Step. We can’t wait to get started!
17 Years of Emma ❤️
Finally, June marked a very special milestone — 17 years of our manager, Emma Irving, at the Day Centre.
Emma has seen the service grow from what it was all those years ago into the thriving Day Centre it is today. Through those 17 years, she has helped guide the service through so many changes, and we’re now finally in the position to work towards our own dream building.
It’s a huge achievement, and one we’re incredibly proud of.
So, summer may be coming to an end, but we certainly aren’t stopping!
With the new building, fundraising, Cancer Connections, Aqua Step, activities, trips and plenty more in the pipeline, there are lots of exciting things to look forward to over the next year.
Thank you to our members, families, volunteers, local businesses, supporters and everyone who helps make the Day Centre what it is. Here’s to the next chapter! 💜
